RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the potential benefits of combining tongue reduction with mandibular setback surgery in patients undergoing class III orthognathic surgery. Specifically, we investigated whether this combined approach reduced the risk of surgical relapse, condylar resorption, and airway space reduction by mitigating tongue pressure on the mandible. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study retrospectively enrolled patients who had undergone bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) with at least 5 mm of setback and met the criteria of a body mass index > 20 kg/m2 and tongue volume > 100 mm3. The study included 20 patients with 10 in the tongue reduction group (TR, n = 10) and 10 in the BSSRO only group (SO, n = 10). RESULTS: The volumetric changes of the total airway space were significantly different between the TR and SO groups (p = 0.028). However, no significant differences were observed in the condylar resorption and postoperative relapse between the groups (p = 0.927 and 0.913, respectively). The difference between the resorption of the anterior and posterior segments of the condyle was also statistically insignificant (p = 0.826). Postoperative counterclockwise rotation of the proximal segment only demonstrated a significant correlation with postoperative relapse (p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in tongue volume demonstrated a preventive effect on the reduction of the airway space after mandibular setback, although it did not yield statistical significance concerning surgical relapse and condylar volume. The counterclockwise rotation of the proximal segment might be responsible for the forward displacement of the distal segment and postoperative relapse. However, the clinical implications of this finding should be interpreted with caution owing to the limited sample size CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Tongue reduction could potentially serve as a preventive measure in preserving the airway space and might be beneficial in mitigating the risk of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with class III deformity.

This case report presents inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) repositioning as a viable approach for implant placement in the mandibular molar region, where challenges of severe alveolar bone width and height deficiencies can exist. Two patients requiring implant placement in the right mandibular molar region underwent nerve transposition and lateralization. In both cases, inadequate alveolar bone height above the IAN precluded the use of short implants. The first patient exhibited an overall low alveolar ridge from the anterior to posterior regions, with a complex relationship with adjacent implant bone level and the mental nerve, complicating vertical augmentation. In the second case, although vertical bone resorption was not severe, the high positioning of the IAN within the alveolar bone due to orthognathic surgery raised concerns regarding adequate height of the implant prosthesis. Therefore, instead of onlay bone grafting, nerve transposition and lateralization were employed for implant placement. In both cases, the follow-up results demonstrated successful osseointegration of all implants and complete recovery of postoperative numbness in the lower lip and mentum area. IAN repositioning is a valuable surgical technique that allows implant placement in severely compromised posterior mandibular regions, promoting patient comfort and successful implant placement without permanent IAN damage.

A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is essential for lung resection. However, performing a CPET can be challenging. This study aimed to develop a machine learning model to estimate maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) using data collected through a patch-type single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring device in candidates for lung resection. This prospective, single-center study included 42 patients who underwent a CPET at a tertiary teaching hospital from October 2021 to July 2022. During the CPET, a single-lead ECG monitoring device was applied to all patients, and the results obtained from the machine-learning algorithm using the information extracted from the ECG patch were compared with the CPET results. According to the Bland-Altman plot of measured and estimated VO2max, the VO2max values obtained from the machine learning model and the FRIEND equation showed lower differences from the reference value (bias: -0.33 mL·kg-1·min-1, bias: 0.30 mL·kg-1·min-1, respectively). In subgroup analysis, the developed model demonstrated greater consistency when applied to different maximal stage levels and sexes. In conclusion, our model provides a closer estimation of VO2max values measured using a CPET than existing equations. This model may be a promising tool for estimating VO2max and assessing cardiopulmonary reserve in lung resection candidates when a CPET is not feasible.

OBJECTIVES: Public healthcare data have become crucial to the advancement of medicine, and recent changes in legal structure on privacy protection have expanded access to these data with pseudonymization. Recent debates on public healthcare data use by private insurance companies have shown large discrepancies in perceptions among the general public, healthcare professionals, private companies, and lawmakers. This study examined public attitudes toward the secondary use of public data, focusing on differences between public and private entities. METHODS: An online survey was conducted from January 11 to 24, 2022, involving a random sample of adults between 19 and 65 of age in 17 provinces, guided by the August 2021 census. RESULTS: The final survey analysis included 1,370 participants. Most participants were aware of health data collection (72.5%) and recent changes in legal structures (61.4%) but were reluctant to share their pseudonymized raw data (51.8%). Overall, they were favorable toward data use by public agencies but disfavored use by private entities, notably marketing and private insurance companies. Concerns were frequently noted regarding commercial use of data and data breaches. Among the respondents, 50.9% were negative about the use of public healthcare data by private insurance companies, 22.9% favored this use, and 1.9% were "very positive." CONCLUSIONS: This survey revealed a low understanding among key stakeholders regarding digital health data use, which is hindering the realization of the full potential of public healthcare data. This survey provides a basis for future policy developments and advocacy for the secondary use of health data.

Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate predisposing factors for the head and neck infections (HNIs), regarding to the demographic data, anatomical spaces, microbiology and antibiotic sensitivity for affected patients. Material and Methods: A 13-year of retrospective study evaluating 470 patients with HNIs, treated as inpatient management in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of KyungHee University school of Dentistry, Seoul, Korea, from January 2009 to February 2022. Statistical analysis of demographic, time-related, anatomic, microbiologic, and treatment variables were investigated for each patient. Results: The frequency of HNIs was significantly higher in 50’s in males, followed by 70’s in females. High Severity score (SS) were significantly associated with increased LOH (Length of hospital stay) and LOM (Length of medication), while LOH showed more intensive relationship compared with LOM. The most frequently involved space in abscess was submandibular space, though incidence and severity of HNIs shows declining tendency throughout 13-year research. Streptococcus viridans was the most predominant species isolated from pus culture growth, and a combination of ampicillin and sulbactam was the 1st choice of antibiotics intravenously. According to the comparison analysis between recommended antibiotics from resistance testing result and clinically administered antibiotics, final coincidence rate was estimated about 55%. Conclusions: Due to HNIs being multifactorial, predicting progression and management of HNIs is still a challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The present study showed several predisposing factors of SHNIs and their correlations, which could contribute to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment planning for clinicians,thereby leading to the improvement of prognosis for patients, ultimately. BACKGROUND: This study aims to measure and compare the differences in vertical bone resorption after vertical augmentation using different types of autologous block bone. METHODS: Data were collected from 38 patients who had undergone vertical ridge augmentation using an autologous block bone before implant insertion. The patients were divided into three groups based on the donor sites: ramus bone (RB), chin bone (CB), and iliac crestal bone (IB). RESULTS: The surgical outcome of the augmentation was evaluated at the follow-up periods up to 60 months. In 38 patients, the mean amount of vertical bone gain was 8.36 ± 1.51 mm in the IB group, followed by the RB group (4.17 ± 1.31 mm) and the CB group (3.44 ± 1.08 mm). There is a significant difference in vertical bone resorption between the groups (p < 0.001), and the RB group demonstrated significantly lower resorption than the CB and IB groups (p = 0.011 and p < 0.001, respectively). The most common postoperative complications included neurosensory disturbance in the CB graft and gait disturbance in the IB graft. Out of the 92 implants inserted after augmentation, four implants were lost during the study period, resulting in an implant success rate of 95.65%. CONCLUSIONS: The RB graft might be the most suitable option for vertical augmentation in terms of maintaining postoperative vertical height and reducing morbidity, although the initial gain was greater with the IB graft compared to other block bones.

Hemangiomas and vascular malformations are common benign lesions of vessels in the cervical region. However, the lesions may not completely disappear and may require surgical or nonsurgical intervention. Several treatment options, including surgical excision, steroid injection, laser therapy, and sclerotherapy, are available. Surgical excision is a commonly used treatment; however, in cases of hemangiomas of the tongue, excision of the lesion may cause esthetic or functional impairments, including speech and swallowing. Sclerotherapy is a simple and safe method for treating vascular lesions conservatively. In this case report, two patients with a vascular lesion of the tongue underwent conservative sclerotherapy without surgical excision using a sclerosing agent (sodium tetradecyl sulfate). Both patients showed regression of the lesion without complications. As presented in these cases, repeated injections of low-dose 1% sodium tetradecyl sulfate as a sclerosing agent were safe and showed satisfactory outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of Working Group 3 was to address the influence of both material- and anti-resorptive drug- related factors on clinical and biological outcomes and complications in implant dentistry. Focused questions were addressed on (a) implant materials other than titanium (alloy)s, (b) transmucosal abutment materials and (c) medications affecting bone metabolism were addressed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three systematic reviews formed the basis for discussion in Group 3. Consensus statements and clinical recommendations were formulated by group consensus based on the findings of the systematic reviews. Patient perspectives and recommendations for future research were also conveyed. These were then presented and accepted following further discussion and modifications as required by the plenary. RESULTS: Zirconia is a valid alternative to titanium as material for implant and transmucosal components, allowing soft and hard tissue integration with clinical outcomes-identified by implant survival, marginal bone loss and peri-implant probing depths-up to 5-years comparable to titatnium. However, most of the evidence for zirconia implants is based on 1-piece implants limiting the indication range. Furthermore, based on expert opinion, zirconia transmucosal components might be preferred in the esthetic zone. In patients receiving low-dose bisphosphonate therapy, the rate of early implant failure is not increased, while the long-term effects remain poorly studied. Although it has not been sufficiently addressed, similar outcomes can be expected with low-dose denosumab. A drug holiday is not recommended when considering implant placement in patients treated with low-dose ARD. However, the specific therapeutic window, the cumulative dose and the administration time should be considered. Access to peri-implant supportive care is mandatory to prevent peri-implantitis-related medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) or implant-related sequestra (IRS). In patients receiving low-dose anti-resorptive drugs (ARD) therapy, the risk of complications related to implant placement is high, and implant procedures in this specific population should be strictly treated in a comprehensive multidisciplinary center. Finally, healthy dental implants should not be removed before low or high-dose ARD. CONCLUSIONS: Zirconia implants can be an alternative to titanium implants in selected indications. However, the current state of evidence remains limited, especially for 2-piece implant designs. Administration of low-dose ARD did not show any negative impact on early implant outcomes, but careful follow-up and supportive care is recommended in order to prevent peri-implant MRONJ and IRS. Implant placement in high-dose patients must be strictly considered in a comprehensive multidisciplinary center.

OBJECTIVES: To review the current evidence on the relationship between agents that affect bone homeostasis and dental implant failures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic searches for bisphosphonates, denosumab, methotrexate, corticosteroids, romosozumab, sunitinib, and bevacizumab were performed using PubMed, MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE (OVID), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Cochrane Library), Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register (Cochrane Library) and Web of Science (Thomson Reuters). Manual searches were also conducted to complement the digital searches for recent issues. RESULTS: Previous publications suggested that bisphosphonates do not compromise the survival of dental implants. However, one study documented an increased risk of implant failure in patients who had received high-dose of intravenous bisphosphonate therapy after implant rehabilitation. There has been an issue of MRONJ around implants in patients who have successfully received implant therapy before and after antiresorptive therapy, leading to late implant failure. Despite evidence on the detrimental effects of denosumab, methotrexate and corticosteroids on bone metabolism, their role in implant survival is not conclusive. CONCLUSIONS: At present, there is insufficient evidence to establish a potential connection between agents that affects bone homeostasis and implant failure. However, some studies have reported negative results for implant therapy. In addition, implant-related sequestration in patients who received anti-resorptive therapy, despite of successful osseointegration, is also noticeable. Although limited studies are available at present, clinicians should still carefully consider the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions to minimize the risks associated with the medications and implant therapy.

In the twenty-first century Korea, "Pristine Vegetables(청정채소)" refers to organic products grown without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. However, the meaning of "Pristine" was radically different until 1970s. After the Korean War, the infection rate of intestinal parasite reached almost 100 percent in Korean population. Disruption in chemical fertilizers manufacturing pressured farmers to use night-soil, which was contaminated with parasite eggs, causing the vicious cycle of infection. At the same time, rapid urbanization increased the demands of fresh vegetables in the city, leading to a large amount of semi-urban agricultural practices. This was closely linked with the national economy; as most of Korean vegetable products were contaminated with parasites, they were deemed unsuitable for export. In 1957, US Army stationed in Seoul issued a guideline for producing local vegetables acceptable for US troop consumption. This gave rise to the concept of "Pristine Vegetables" that were free of any infectious materials. These practices continued well into the 1970s. Due to the lack of sewage treatment system, the waste of urban population provided necessary fertilizer for these farmers without much cost. In order to secure public health, the Korean government actively encouraged the use of chemical fertilizers, naming the vegetables "Pristine." This effort included the ban of night-soil in urban and semi-urban farms and the establishment of Pristine Vegetable Shops. However, the rapid decline of parasitic diseases in the population and the rising concerns of environmental pollutions reshaped Pristine Vegetables from chemical to organic in the 1980s. Thus, Pristine Vegetable in Korea during late twentieth century exemplifies rapid transformation of the urban environment, showing shifted concept of cleanness and contaminants among the public and policymakers, as well as acceptable risk of the urban environment in Korea.

RESUMEN

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is a type of bacteria that typically infects the pulmonary system, and NTM-central nervous system (CNS) infection, which occurs in the brain, is a very rare disease. A 64-year-old female patient presented with seizures as the main symptom and was found to have a mass of less than 1 cm in the right temporal lobe with accompanying edema. Although diseases such as tumor metastasis and parasitic cyst were suspected, the patient underwent a surgical resection, and NTM-CNS infection with abscess was diagnosed through biopsy. Antibiotic treatment was initiated after surgery, and the patient has been followed up without any significant symptoms. In this report, we review a rare case of NTM-CNS infection and discuss the understanding and treatment of this disease.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the function of enamel matrix derivative (EMD)-liquid compared to EMD-gel (original Emdogain® with polyglycolic acid-carrier) in inducing soft tissue regeneration using a rat dorsal model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four subcutaneous pouches were created through dorsal skin incisions in 18 female Wistar rats and randomly allocated to the following groups: (1) sterile saline + non-crosslinked collagen matrix (CM), (2) EMD-gel + CM, and (3) EMD-liquid + CM. After 2 and 4 weeks of healing, the specimens were harvested and stained with Goldner's trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin, and were immunohistochemically stained with an anti-CD31 antibody. RESULTS: The EMD-liquid group showed the thickest connective tissue compared to the other groups, with statistical significance both at 2 (p < 0.001) and 4 weeks (p = 0.011 and 0.023, respectively). The number of multinucleated giant cells was not significantly different among the groups for both periods. Moreover, there was a tendency to have more blood vessels over a longer period, and the highest number of blood vessels was observed in the EMD-liquid group at 4 weeks (p = 0.009 and 0036, respectively). CONCLUSION: EMD-liquid-treated CM is advantageous compared to using CM alone or EMD-gel-treated CM, owing to the histomorphometric results that show significantly increased soft tissue thickness and number of blood vessels when EMD-liquid was pre-primed to CM. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: EMD with a liquid carrier may be an appropriate biologic supplement to provide cell-inducing properties to the CM scaffold and is clinically more beneficial for phenotype modification therapy than CM only and EMD-gel-treated CM.

Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates lead to the depletion of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate involved in the mevalonate pathway. The effect of geranylgeraniol (GGOH) on human osteoblast and osteoclast activities suppressed by zoledronate was investigated in this study. The effect of GGOH on human osteoblasts and osteoclasts subjected to treatment with zoledronate was analyzed by assessing cell viability, osteoclast differentiation, resorption ability, gene expression, and protein synthesis. Cell viability suppressed by bisphosphonates in osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor cells was restored with GGOH. Osteoclast differentiation was analyzed by vitronectin receptor immunofluorescence staining, and the addition of GGOH to zoledronate significantly increased osteoclast differentiation compared with zoledronate alone. A trend of reversal of osteoclast resorption by GGOH was observed; however, it was not significant in all groups. The expression of ALP, type 1 collagen, and RUNX2 in osteoblasts was recovered by the addition of GGOH. Only CALCR expression in osteoclasts was significantly recovered by GGOH addition in the zoledronate group. Although the activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were not entirely restored, the possibility that the topical application of GGOH in MRONJ patients or patients with dental problems and bisphosphonates might lessen the risk of development and recurrence of MRONJ is shown.

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular anastomosis, particularly side-to-side (STS) bypass, is a complex surgical procedure. While several suture techniques exist, none of them is superior to the others. We assessed the association between various STS bypass techniques and vessel twisting using chicken wing training models. METHODS: Three suture techniques were compared over an anterior wall suture procedure. The unidirectional continuous suture (UCS) group used a downward "right-to-left" continuous suture. The reverse continuous suture (RCS) group used a downward "left-to-right" continuous suture. The interrupted suture (IS) group used the standard interrupted suture. The number of samples in each of the three groups was 30 (n=90). We compared the incidence of vessel twisting and rotation angles across groups. RESULTS: Vessel twisting occurred in 96.7%, 56.7%, and 0% of the cases in the UCS, IS, and RCS groups, respectively. The incidence of vessel twisting differed significantly in all 3 groups (p<0.001), with an apparent trend (p=0.002). The mean rotation angles were 201˚±90.6˚, 102˚±107.6˚, and 0˚ in the UCS, IS, and RCS groups, respectively, which were significantly different (p<0.001). On excluding cases without twisting, the rotation angles of twisted vessels in the UCS and IS groups were 207.9˚±83.7˚ and 180˚±77.9˚, respectively, which yielded a significant difference between these groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We found that the incidence and trend of vessel twisting differed significantly across suture techniques. The RCS technique may aid in preventing vessel twisting in the STS bypass procedure.

To fabricate miniature semiconductors of 10 nm or less, various process technologies have reached their physical limits, and new process technologies for miniaturization are required. In the etching process, problems such as surface damage and profile distortion have been reported during etching using conventional plasma. Therefore, several studies have reported novel etching techniques such as atomic layer etching (ALE). In this study, a new type of adsorption module, called the radical generation module, was developed and applied in the ALE process. Using this module, the adsorption time could be reduced to 5 s. Moreover, the reproducibility of the process was verified and an etch per cycle of 0.11 nm/cycle was maintained as the process progressed up to 40 cycles.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a partial glossectomy on volumetric changes of pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in patients with mandibular setback surgery. Overall, 25 patients showing clinical features related to macroglossia treated with mandibular setback surgery were included in this retrospective study. Subjects were divided into two groups: the control group (G1, n = 13, with BSSRO) and the study group (G2, n = 12, with both BSSRO and partial glossectomy). The PAS volume of both groups was measured by the OnDemand 3D program on CBCT taken shortly before operation (T0), 3 months post-operative (T1), and 6 months post-operative (T2). A paired t-test and repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistical correlation. Total PAS and hypopharyngeal airway space were increased after operation in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (p < 0.05), while oropharyngeal airway space showed no significant statistical difference with the tendency of increasing. The combination of partial glossectomy and BSSRO surgical techniques had a significant effect on increasing the hypopharyngeal and total airway space in class III malocclusion patients (p < 0.05).

BACKGROUND: As society becomes more complex, the incidence of mandibular fractures is increasing. This study aimed to analyze the incidence and type and identify etiological factors of mandibular fractures to use them in future treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from 224 patients who visited the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Kyung Hee Medical Center dental hospital during a 6-year period (2016 to 2021). A logistic regression model was used for data analysis. RESULTS: In a total of 224 patients, 362 fractures were appeared. The average age of the patients was 34.1 years, with the highest incidence in the 20s. And the ratio between male and female was 4.09:1. Symphysis fractures were the most prevalent of all patients (52.7%), followed by unilateral condyle (37.1%), angle (36.2%), bilateral condyle (9.4%), body (8%), and coronoid (2.2%). The most common cause of fracture was daily-life activity (57.6%), followed by violence (30.4%), traffic accidents (8.5%), and syncope (3.6%). Patients with symphysis fracture were at low risk (OR < 1) of angle, body, and unilateral condyle fractures. Similarly, patients with unilateral fracture were at low risk (OR < 1) of symphysis, angle, body, and others site fractures. In contrast, patient with bilateral condyle fracture were at high risk (OR > 1) of coronoid fractures. And younger patients were high risk of mandibular angle fractures. CONCLUSION: Through this study, it was confirmed that etiological factors of mandibular fractures were like those of previous studies.

In this study, the average grain size was evaluated from a microstructure image using a convolutional neural network. Since the grain size in a microstructure image can be directly measured and verified in the original image, unlike the chemical composition or mechanical properties of material, it is more appropriate to validate the training results quantitatively. An analysis of microstructure images, such as grain size, can be performed manually or using image analysis software; however, it is expected that the analysis would be simpler and faster with machine learning. Microstructure images were created using a phase-field simulation, and machine learning was carried out with a convolutional neural network model. The relationship between the microstructure image and the average grain size was not judged by classification, as the goal was to have different results for each microstructure using regression. The results showed high accuracy within the training range. The average grain sizes of experimental images with explicit grain boundary were well estimated by the network. The mid-layer image was analyzed to examine how the network understood the input microstructure image. The network seemed to recognize the curvatures of the grain boundaries and estimate the average grain size from these curvatures.

Purpose: End-stage lung diseases result in anatomical changes of the thoracic cavity. However, very few studies have assessed changes in the thoracic cavity after lung transplantation (LTx). This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between thoracic cavity volume (TCV) changes after LTx and underlying lung disease. Methods: We reviewed 89 patients who underwent a pre-LTx pulmonary function test (PFT), chest computed tomography (CT) scan, and 1-year follow-up CT after LTx. These patients were classified into two groups according to pre-LTx PFT as follows: obstructive group [forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio < 70%] and restrictive group (FEV1/FVC ratio > 70%). We measured TCV using CT scan before and at 1 year after LTx and compared the TCV change in the two groups. Results: In the restrictive group, TCV increased after LTx (preop: 2,347.8 ± 709.5 mL, 1-year postop: 3,224.4 ± 919.0 mL, p < 0.001). In contrast, in the obstructive group, it decreased after LTx (preop: 4,662.9 ± 1,296.3 mL, 1-year postop: 3,711.1 ± 891.7 mL, p < 0.001). We observed that restrictive lung disease, taller stature, lower body mass index, and larger donor lung were independently associated with increased TCV after LTx. Conclusion: The disease-specific chest remodeling caused by restriction and hyperinflation is at least, in part, reversible. After LTx, the chest remodeling appears to occur in the opposite direction to the disease-specific remodeling caused by the underlying lung disease in recipients.

DDT exemplifies success and failure of modern science and technology. Once it was heralded as technological wonder that will deliver human from misery of insect-borne infectious disease. However DDT took dramatic downturn after failure in global malaria eradication program initiated by World Health Organization, with advent of DDT-resistant strain of mosquitoes. Although insecticide resistance has been know since late 19th century, the definitions and mythologies for finding resistance has not been settled until 1950s. This paper argues that discovery of DDT-resistant strain of body lice in prisoners of war camp in Korea during the Korean War provided essential knowledge and opportunity for advancing insecticide resistance studies. Since 1945 to the end of Korean War, US Army sprayed thousands of tonnes of DDT on Korean body and soil. DDT was only went into wide field application since 1943, was still a very new technology. The ways to deliver and utilize DDT was still under the investigation. And Korea, especially during the War, was ideal place to construct such knowledge and place it in the application. The main focus was to control public health threats, such as louse-borne typhus fever. Korean soldiers and prisoners of war exposed to regular dose of DDT, which soon gave rise to DDT-resistant strain of body lice. It was the first major outbreak of insecticide-resistance appeared in insect that has major public health importance. Until early 1950s, mechanisms of resistance, or even definition of insecticide resistance was unclear. Researchers in US Army and Department of Agriculture rushed to find the ways to quantify insecticide resistance. Network of laboratories, connecting Korea-Japan-US, had to devise new laboratory methods to rear, and test body lice. These body lice later migrate to laboratories in US, providing valuable asset for future insecticide resistance research in US. At the same time, laboratory methods of testing resistance in body louse became a standard across the globe, setting new research agenda through World Health Organization. This shows flow of knowledge, along with migration of body louse, during the Korean War. At the same time, this case show who new knowledge is constructed through the expense of involvement of minority populations, such as natives, soldiers, and prisoners of war.
